NOVELTY - Carbon nanotubes are exposed to an alkali metal source in presence of an aprotic solvent, and the carbon nanotubes are opened by exposing. The opened carbon nanotubes are exposed to electrophile to form functionalized graphene nanoribbons. USE - Preparation of functionalized graphene nanoribbons used for composite and fiber for transparent conductive display, deicing circuit, gas-barrier composite and screen (all claimed). Uses include but are not limited to semiconductor film, conductive film, cathode material of lithium-ion battery and lithium polymer battery, electroactive material, capacitor and solar cell. ADVANTAGE - The method enables economical preparation of functionalized graphene nanoribbons having suppressed defects, with high yield.
