NOVELTY - A battery comprises: 1) a cathode and an anode separated by a separator layer; 2) an electrically insulating carbon layer at least partially encapsulating the anode; 3) carbon nano-onions (CNOs) defining interstitial pore(s) interspersed throughout the electrically insulating carbon layer; and 4) an electrolyte in contact with the electrically insulating carbon layer and the cathode. USE - As lithium-ion and lithium sulfur batteries. ADVANTAGE - In the battery, lithium dendritic structure formation on metallic lithium electrodes (anodes), is suppressed, to prevent lithium metal dendrite-induced internal short circuit and thermal runaway problems, and enable battery to have stable and long-lifetime.
