NOVELTY - Precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films are treated by irradiating with specified duration exposure to microwaves and/or UV light; and cooling irradiated precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films. USE - Treatment of precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films for carbonized graphene-polymer hybrid fiber, tow, yam, or film composite (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The time required to stabilize the pre-cursor polymeric fibers, tows, yams, or films in preparation for carbonization or other secondary thermochemical processes and products is reduced. Precursor is used in the creation of carbon fibers while maintaining the desirable high strength, high modulus, low density, and high chemical resistance expected in a carbon fiber. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) carbonized graphene-polymer hybrid fiber, tow, yam, or film composite comprising a carbonized graphene-polymer hybrid fiber, tow, yam, or film composed of carbonized pre-cursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films; and graphene; and (2) system for treating pre-cursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films, comprising irradiating unit for irradiating precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films with specified duration exposure; and a heating unit for heating the irradiated precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films to achieve stabilization of precursor polymeric fibers, tows, yarns, or films.
