NOVELTY - The battery (20) has two or more cells (10A-10C) comprising two electrodes (22, 24) selected from a first electrode containing a sulfur-containing electroactive material and a second electrode containing a negative electroactive material. A first capacitor electrode (30) contains a positive capacitor active material. A second capacitor electrode contains a negative capacitor active material. Each electrode is positioned adjacent to a surface of a current collector and a separator (26) is positioned between adjacent electrodes, to effect electrical separation between the first and second electrodes, the first electrode and the second capacitor electrode, the second electrode and the first capacitor electrode, and the first and second capacitor electrodes. The two or more cells contains the first electrode and the second electrode and no cell contains both the first electrode and the first capacitor electrode or both the second electrode and the second capacitor electrode. USE - Capacitor-backed lithium-sulfur battery for battery-powered vehicle such as motorcycles, boats, tractors, buses, motorcycles, mobile homes, caravans and tanks and portable consumer electronic device and electric motor for electrified vehicle, laptop computer, tablet computer, cell phone, and cordless power tools or appliances.
