NOVELTY - Manufacture of dense layer involves providing a substrate and a suspension of non-agglomerated nanoparticles of a material (P), depositing a layer on substrate from suspension, drying, densifying the dried layer by mechanical compression and/or heat treatment. The suspension of non-agglomerated nanoparticles of material (P) comprises nanoparticles of material (P) having a size distribution characterized by D50 value. The distribution comprises nanoparticles of material (P) of size (d1) of 20-50 nm, and P-material nanoparticles of a size (d2) characterized by a d50 value at least five times lower than that size (d1). Alternately, the distribution has an average particle size of material (P) of less than 50 nm, and an average standard deviation ratio of more than 0.6. USE - Manufacture of dense layer for anode, cathode or electrolyte of electrochemical device e.g. lithium ion battery (all claimed). Can also be used for microbattery, capacitor, supercapacitor and photovoltaic cell. ADVANTAGE - The dense layer has high ionic conductivity, and provides battery having excellent thermal stability and durability.
