NOVELTY - Carboxylic-intercalated graphite compound composition (I) for the production of exfoliated graphite, flexible graphite, or nano-scaled graphene platelets, comprises a layered graphite with interlayer spaces or interstices and a carboxylic acid residing in at least one of the interstices, where the intercalated compound is prepared by a chemical oxidation reaction which uses a combination of a carboxylic acid and hydrogen peroxide as an intercalate source. USE - (I) is useful for the production of exfoliated graphite, flexible graphite and nano-scaled graphene platelets. ADVANTAGE - (I) provides nano-scaled graphene platelets (NGPs) in larger quantities, where the NGPs are relatively uniform in thickness, and without using an undesirable acid like sulfuric acid and undesirable oxidizing agent like nitric acid or potassium permanganate, hence cost effective. (I) does not release undesirable chemical contaminants into air and drainage.
