NOVELTY - The water purification and desalination device comprises a flow path for water, a perforated graphene material positioned within the flow path, a first container for containing the water after the water is passed through the graphene material, a second container, and a seal. The graphene material is present in a form of graphene material atomic layers in a thickness of graphene and one-atom-thick planar sheets of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice. The atomic layers include graphene sheets having an interplanar spacing of 300-370 nm. USE - Used as a water purification and desalination device. ADVANTAGE - The water purification and desalination device energy efficiently removes suspended solids, dissolved salts and micro-organisms from water thus providing highly purified drinkable water. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - The water purification and desalination device comprises a flow path for water, a perforated graphene material positioned within the flow path, a first container for containing the water after the water is passed through the graphene material, a second container, and a seal. The graphene material is present in a form of graphene material atomic layers in a thickness of graphene and one-atom-thick planar sheets of sp2-bonded carbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice. The atomic layers include graphene sheets having an interplanar spacing of 300-370 nm. The graphene material is part of a membrane of material, and has openings that are present in a range of 1-50 nm. The first container has a sealable end and a membrane end. The second container has a closed end and an open end. The first container fits within the second container. The seal is positioned between an exterior of the first container and an interior of the first container to force water in the second container through the membrane end of the first container. The membrane filters out impurities in the water, and includes the graphene material layers. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a method for purifying water.
