NOVELTY - The apparatus has a two-dimensional (2D) anode that is positioned on a substrate. A 2D cold cathode is positioned on the substrate opposed to the 2D anode. 2D grids include a portion positioned on the substrate between the 2D anode and the 2D cold cathode. Each of the 2D anode, the 2D cold cathode, and multiple 2D grids comprises a first diamond layer, and a second diamond layer. A layer of graphene is induced from the first diamond layer, the layer of graphene positioned between the first diamond layer and the second diamond layer. USE - Apparatus for forming two-dimensional graphene cold cathode, anode, and grid. ADVANTAGE - The apparatus can be operated at lower voltage to allow for reduced cooling requirements, thus reducing shielding and cooling costs, and weight. The apparatus ensures that atoms in the cathode is confined and remain in place by positioning the layer of graphene between the diamond layers such that tip erosion decreases or is eliminated together.
