NOVELTY - A mode-locked fiber laser system (100) comprises a multicomponent-glass optical fiber doped with rare-earth ions of at least one of thulium and holmium and having a length of 0.75-150 cm. The fiber laser system is configured to be passively mode-locked with the use of a saturable absorber (102) that includes at least one of metallic nano-spheres, metallic nano-wires, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, and graphene components. A pulse-repetition rate of the fiber laser system is 0.1-20 GHz. USE - A mode-locked fiber laser system. ADVANTAGE - The length of the laser cavity of the mode-locked fiber laser is reduced, as compared with the devices of the related art, which affords an increase in the repetition rate of the pulsed operation. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A mode-locked fiber laser system (100) comprises a multicomponent-glass optical fiber doped with rare-earth ions of at least one of thulium and holmium and having a length of 0.75-150 cm. The multicomponent-glass optical fiber is configured as a gain-medium (110) of the fiber laser system, where a refractive index of the multicomponent glass of the optical fiber is greater than 1.55 at 589 nm. The fiber laser system is configured to be passively mode-locked with the use of a saturable absorber (102) that includes at least one of metallic nano-spheres, metallic nano-wires, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, and graphene components. A pulse-repetition rate of the fiber laser system is 0.1-20 GHz. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for operating the mode-locked fiber laser system comprising transmitting light from a pump laser source (104) through at least a first optical fiber element to an optical fiber system including a multicomponent-glass optical-fiber, a saturable absorber and a reflector (114) integrated with the gain medium; and partially transmitting light incident onto the reflector to a field-of-view outside the fiber laser system in such a matter as to provide for a pulsed light output (120), by the optical fiber system.
