NOVELTY - A functional graphene composition comprises graphene scaffold, and metal chelating functional group(s) covalently bonded to the graphene scaffolds and comprising N-alkoxyamide or hydroxamic acid moiety. USE - A functional graphene composition for removing dissolved metal from an aqueous liquid that is acidified or neutral, such as drinking water or wastewater, and acid mine drainage (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The functional graphene composition effectively removes dissolved metal from an aqueous liquid. The insolubility and settling of the functional graphene material can be capitalized upon to recover materials from these water supplies, such as, stream beds having acid mine drainage. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) porous structure comprising porous substrate and functional graphene composition on the porous substrate, comprising a metal chelating functional group covalently bonded to a graphene scaffold, where the metal chelating functional group comprises carboxyl moiety, hydroxamic acid moiety, N-alkoxylamide moiety, and/or catechol moiety; and (2) removing dissolved metal from an aqueous liquid, which involves adding to the aqueous liquid, a compound comprising functionalized graphene comprising a metal-chelating functional group covalently bonded to a graphene, to chelate the dissolved metal.
