NOVELTY - Forming a metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide composite film comprises: providing (102) a graphene oxide dispersion; adding (104) a metal oxide to the graphene oxide dispersion to form a metal oxide/graphene oxide dispersion; forming (106) a metal oxide/graphene oxide film by filtering the metal oxide/graphene oxide dispersion using a directional flow directed assembly; and reducing (108) the metal oxide/graphene oxide film using a reducing agent to form the metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide composite film. USE - The method is useful for forming a metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide composite film, which is useful in an electrode, which is a free-standing electrode (all claimed) and useful in thermoelectric, gas sensor, bio sensor and fuel cell and for flexible energy storage devices such as batteries and supercapacitors. ADVANTAGE - The composite film provides the electrode with improved mechanical and electrical properties, good electrochemical stability, flexibility and quality and high charge/discharge characteristics and tensile strength in a cost-effective manner. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) a composite film formed by the method; (2) a composite film comprising one or more sheets of reduced graphene oxide, and one or more metal oxide nanostructures attached to the sheets of reduced graphene oxide; and (3) an electrode comprising the composite.
