NOVELTY - Pristine nano graphene platelets are produced by providing pristine graphitic material comprising graphite crystallite(s) having graphene plane(s) and edge surface; dispersing multiple particles of pristine graphitic material in liquid medium having no surfactant to produce suspension; and exposing suspension to direct ultrasonication at energy or intensity level for length of time. The multiple particles in liquid have concentration greater than 0.1 mg/ml. The liquid medium has surface tension that enables wetting of liquid on graphene plane exhibiting contact angle of less than 90 degrees . USE - Method of producing pristine nano graphene platelets. ADVANTAGE - The method converts greater than or equal to 99% of the pristine graphitic material to nano graphene platelets; produces product having good electrical conductivity and average thickness of less than 10 (preferably less than 1) nm; does not employ undesirable acid, oxidizing agent, chemical reducing agent, or a surfactant; can directly produce a dispersion product without having to remove a surfactant or any other chemical from the dispersion; and can directly produce a precursor to a composite product.
