NOVELTY - Manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites reinforced with GO-GNFs comprises (1) ozonating GNFs using dry ozone generator; (ii) surface-modifying the ozone-treated graphite nanofibers through SN2 substitution reaction using SOCl2 solution; (iii) washing with THF to prevent hydrolysis of graphite nanofibers surface-modified; (iv) combining graphite nanofibers with GO; (v) removing remaining graphite nanofibers or graphene oxide residues other than the GO-GNF, washing with ethanol and distilled water, and drying; (vi) mixing the graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite with epoxy resin using acetone; (vii) stabilizing mixture of graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite and epoxy resin; (viii) performing curing reaction by adding DDM as curing agent to epoxy resin mixture; (ix) stabilizing mixture in vacuum oven; and (x) impregnating mixture of graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite, epoxy resin, and curing agent into carbon fibers and curing through hot pressing. USE - The method is useful for manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites reinforced with graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite. ADVANTAGE - The method creates strong interfacial interaction and adhesion with thermosetting epoxy resin, resulting in interfacial properties and mechanical strength and improves carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite material. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Manufacturing carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites reinforced with graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite (GO-GNFs) comprises (1) ozonating graphite nanofibers (GNFs) using dry ozone generator; (ii) surface-modifying the ozone-treated graphite nanofibers in step (i) through a SN2 substitution reaction using thionyl chloride (SOCl2) solution; (iii) washing with tetrahydrofuran (THF) to prevent hydrolysis of the graphite nanofibers surface-modified in step (ii); (iv) combining graphite nanofibers prepared in step (iii) with graphene oxide (GO); (v) removing remaining graphite nanofibers or graphene oxide residues other than the graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite (GO-GNF) prepared in step (iv), washing with ethanol and distilled water, and drying; (vi) mixing the graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite prepared in step (v) with an epoxy resin using acetone as an organic solvent; (vii) stabilizing the mixture of the graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite prepared in step (vi) and epoxy resin; (viii) performing a curing reaction by adding 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as a curing agent to the epoxy resin mixture prepared in step (vii); (ix) stabilizing mixture prepared in step (viii) in vacuum oven; and (x) impregnating the mixture of the graphene oxide/graphite nanofiber composite prepared in step (ix), an epoxy resin, and a curing agent into carbon fibers and curing them through hot pressing.
