NOVELTY - The seal assembly (1) has a rotating seal ring (2) and a stationary seal ring (3), where a sealing gap (4) is defined between the rotating seal ring and the stationary seal ring. A liquid medium (9) is arranged in the sealing gap, where the liquid medium includes a graphene-containing material. The liquid medium is water or oil, where the graphene-containing material includes graphene in the form of pure graphene and/or graphene oxide and/or technically reduced graphene and/or functional graphene. USE - Mechanical seal assembly. ADVANTAGE - The liquid medium including the graphene-containing material is arranged in the sealing gap, thus enabling to reduce the coefficient of friction in the sealing gap between sliding faces of the sliding rings. The seal assembly is simple and easy to construct, and inexpensive. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for a method for operating a mechanical seal assembly.
