NOVELTY - Article of manufacture comprises: an epitaxial graphene layer; and a monolayer of molecules on a surface of the graphene layer, where the molecules are 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) molecules arranged in a herringbone phase and/or the molecules comprising substituted anthra(2,1,9-def;6,5,10-d'e'f')diisoquinoline-1,3,8,10-tetraone compounds (I). USE - The article is useful in graphene-based molecular electronic and sensing devices. ADVANTAGE - The article provides: forming robust, uniform, self-assembled organic monolayers on epitaxial graphene, where the self-assembled monolayers are useful as a template for further chemistry or materials deposition on graphene; and well-ordered, stable, robust, nearly defect-free monolayer, which is useful for exploring self-assembly chemistry on graphene, tailoring the chemical functionality of graphene, and templated growth and deposition of other materials.
