NOVELTY - A functionalized graphene is prepared by functionalizing graphene with a chemical linker when the graphene is in a substantially dry condition. USE - Preparation of functionalized graphene for functionalized graphene composition used for reducing the content of metallic pigments in coating composition, coating composition for coated article e.g., metal substrate, automotive vehicle, aircraft, electrical or domestic appliance, offshore structure, marine vessel or dry dock, and as a replacement for metallic pigments in coating layer (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - By functionalizing graphene with chemical linker, graphene is able to bond with a binder, e.g. resin and/or hardener, which helps to ensure that graphene is effectively dispersed and does not agglomerate in the binder. Since functionalization is carried out with graphene in a dry condition, rather than being dispersed in a solvent, reduced quantities of chemical linker are needed for functionalizing graphene which helps to reduce costs. The introduction of functionalized graphene into a coating composition enables the content of metallic pigments in the coating composition to be reduced by greater than or equal to 50 wt.% while improving the corrosion protective and mechanical properties of coatings thus formed. The incorporation of functionalized graphene results in a denser coating network with improved barrier and mechanical properties while simultaneously reducing the overall weight of the coatings thus formed. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: (1) functionalized graphene composition comprising 0.1-10 wt.% chemical linker and graphene; (2) reducing the content of metallic pigments in coating composition comprising metallic pigments and a binder, which involves replacing or reducing a proportion of metallic pigments from coating composition and replacing the metallic pigments with a filler and functionalized graphene or functionalized graphene composition; (3) coating composition comprising (i) binder; (ii) metallic pigment; (iii) filler; and (iv) functionalized graphene for partially replacing a proportion of metallic pigments in coating composition, where the functionalized graphene is functionalized graphene functionalized graphene composition; (4) coated article comprising a coating layer formed from the coating composition; and (5) producing a coated article which involves applying the composition to the surface of article.
