NOVELTY - Preparation of a graphite oxide from graphite comprises treating graphite with a permanganate salt(s) in the presence of a solution comprising (vol.%) sulfuric acid (55-95), and water (5-45). USE - Method for the preparation of a graphite oxide used for preparing graphene sheets (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The method does not require the use of potentially explosive reagents or concentrated mineral acids. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for graphite oxide.
