NOVELTY - Graphene-based foam having a structure defined by a three-dimensional network of interconnected and ordered open cells is claimed. The open cells are defined by cell walls. The cell walls are formed of graphene sheets, partially reduced graphene oxide sheets, and/or reduced graphene oxide sheets, and has a thickness defined by the thickness of many graphene sheets, partially reduced graphene oxide sheets, and/or reduced graphene oxide sheets. USE - The graphene-based foam is useful in an electrode, capacitor, fuel cell, battery, capacitive desalination device, thermal or acoustic insulator, chemical or mechanical sensor, actuator, adsorbent, catalyst support, filter, electronic component, a graphene-based film comprising or in the form of a permanently compressed graphene-based foam (claimed) and in biomedical applications, field emission, mechanical damping, and three dimensional flexible electronic devices. ADVANTAGE - The graphene-based foam: has a density of 0.5-7 mg/cm3, and a compression set at 50% compression of less than or equal to 15% (claimed), thus exhibiting improved mechanical properties and minimizing the loss of unique properties attributed to the graphene-based material; has inherent electrical conductivity; and can be prepared without shrinkage or less shrinkage in a controlled manner. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are also included for: (1) a composition comprising the graphene-based foam; and (2) preparing the graphene-based foam, comprising providing a dispersion of graphene sheets, partially reduced graphene oxide sheets, and/or reduced graphene oxide sheets in a freeze castable medium, and subjecting the dispersion to freeze casting.
