NOVELTY - Method for reducing the amount of one or more solutes in an aqueous mixture to produce a liquid depleted in the solutes involves contacting a first face of a graphene oxide laminate membrane with the aqueous mixture comprising the one or more solutes, and recovering the liquid from or downstream from a second face of the membrane, where the graphene oxide laminate membrane has a thickness greater than 100 nm and the graphene oxide flakes of which the laminate is comprised have an average oxygen and carbon in a weight ratio of 0.2:1-0.5:1. USE - The method is useful for reducing the amount of one or more solutes in an aqueous mixture to produce a liquid depleted in the solutes (claimed), and purifying water. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Method for reducing the amount of one or more solutes in an aqueous mixture to produce a liquid depleted in the solutes involves (a) (i) contacting a first face of a graphene oxide laminate membrane with the aqueous mixture comprising the one or more solutes, and (ii) recovering the liquid from or downstream from a second face of the membrane, where the graphene oxide laminate membrane has a thickness greater than 100 nm and the graphene oxide flakes of which the laminate is comprised have an average oxygen and carbon in a weight ratio of 0.2:1-0.5:1, or (b) (i) contacting the aqueous mixture with a sorbent comprising a graphene oxide laminate membrane, and (b) separating the sorbent from the liquid. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) fluid filtration device comprising a graphene oxide laminate membrane; and (2) sorbent comprising a graphene oxide laminate membrane supported on a flexible porous support.
