NOVELTY - A secondary electrochemical cell (10) comprises an anode (12), a cathode (16) comprising electrochemically active cathode material, a separator (20) comprising separator materials between the electrodes, and an electrolyte comprising salt dissolved in organic solvent. The separator in combination with the electrolyte has an area-specific resistance of 2 ohm/cm2 or less. The lithium-metal oxide is chosen from lithium-cobalt-oxide, lithium-nickel-manganese-oxide (I), lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide (II), lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide (III), and lithium-manganese-oxide(lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide) (IV). The electrochemically active cathode material comprises one or more electrochemically active cathode materials chosen from the group of lithium-transition-metal phosphate, sodium-transition-metal phosphate, and lithium-metal oxide. The separator materials are chosen from polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylidene, and poly(vinylidene fluoride). USE - Secondary electrochemical cell e.g. lithium-ion secondary battery. Uses include but are not limited to laptop computers, tablets, Smart phones, cell phones, digital cameras, video camcorders, video games, power tools, high intensity flashlights, remote control toys, and electric bikes. ADVANTAGE - The secondary electrochemical cell has excellent charge/discharge capacity, and safety characteristics. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - A secondary electrochemical cell comprises an anode, a cathode comprising electrochemically active cathode material, a separator comprising separator materials between the electrodes, and an electrolyte comprising at least one salt dissolved in at least one organic solvent. The separator in combination with the electrolyte has an area-specific resistance of 2 ohm/cm2 or less. The lithium-metal oxide is chosen from lithium-cobalt-oxide, lithium-nickel-manganese-oxide of formula: LiNixMn2O4 (I), lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide of formula: Li(NixCoyAlz)O2 (II), lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide of formula: Li(NixMnyCoz)O2 (III), and lithium-manganese-oxide(lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide) of formula: aLi2MnO3-(1-a)Li(NixMnyCoz)O2 (IV), where a is 0-1 (excluding 0 and 1), x,y,z is 0-1. The electrochemically active cathode material comprises one or more electrochemically active cathode materials chosen from the group of lithium-transition-metal phosphate, sodium-transition-metal phosphate, and lithium-metal oxide. The separator materials are chosen from polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinylidene, and poly(vinylidene fluoride).
