NOVELTY - An antimicrobial paint composition comprises a carrier fluid chosen from water, solvents, and liquid polymers, a sulfonated polymer chosen from perfluorosulfonic acid polymer, polystyrene sulfonate, sulfonated block copolymer, sulfonated polyolefin, sulfonated polyimide, sulfonated polyamide, sulfonated polyester, sulfonated polysulfone, sulfonated polyketone, sulfonated poly(arylene ether), and their mixtures, and optionally a binder, optionally at least an additive chosen from fillers, elution additives, coalescing aids, surfactants, wetting agents, thickeners, rheology modifiers, defoamers, compatibilizers, plasticizers, tackifiers, surfactants, cross-linkers, UV absorbers, highly conjugated particles, or tubes (e.g. carbon black, graphene, or carbon nanotubes). USE - Antimicrobial paint composition used for substrate such as indoor and outdoor objects/structures, construction material, metal, metal pipe, masonry, wood, decking, docks, boat, roads, siding, porous or semi-porous materials including stone, brick, wall board, ceiling tiles, concrete, unglazed tile, stucco, grout, painted surfaces, roofing tiles, shingles, fabric, tents, furniture, and painted or treated wood and sterilize and prevent transmission of microbes from surface prone to exposure to microbes (all claimed). Uses include but are not limited to living home, public building, laboratory, school, office, residential building, gym, sauna, swimming pool area, hotel, restaurant, foodstuff manufacturing factory, car, ambulance, bus, train, airplane, and boats and ships. ADVANTAGE - The paint composition has excellent antimicrobial property. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An antimicrobial paint composition comprises a carrier fluid chosen from water, solvents, and liquid polymers, a sulfonated polymer chosen from perfluorosulfonic acid polymer, polystyrene sulfonate, sulfonated block copolymer, sulfonated polyolefin, sulfonated polyimide, sulfonated polyamide, sulfonated polyester, sulfonated polysulfone, sulfonated polyketone, sulfonated poly(arylene ether), and their mixtures, and optionally a binder, optionally at least an additive chosen from fillers, elution additives, coalescing aids, surfactants, wetting agents, thickeners, rheology modifiers, defoamers, compatibilizers, plasticizers, tackifiers, surfactants, cross-linkers, UV absorbers, highly conjugated particles, or tubes (e.g. carbon black, graphene, carbon nanotubes). The sulfonated polymer is in the paint composition in a sufficient amount for a surface coated with the antimicrobial paint composition to have a coating of sulfonated polymer of more than 1 pm to inhibit at least 90% microbes in contact with the coated surface within 120 minutes. The sulfonated polymer has a degree of sulfonation of at least 10%. INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) manufacture of the antimicrobial paint composition, which involves providing the sulfonated polymer in the form of crumbs, films, membranes, fiber, powder, pellets, or liquid dispersion, mixing the sulfonated polymer with a liquid carrier, optionally mixing in at least the binder, and optionally mixing in at least the additive chosen from group of fillers, elution additives, coalescing aids, surfactants, thickeners, rheology modifiers, defoamers, compatibilizers, plasticizers, tackifiers, surfactants, cross-linkers, UV absorbers, carbon black, graphene, and carbon nanotubes; and (2) method to sterilize and prevent transmission of microbes from surface prone to exposure to microbes, which involves coating the surface with the paint composition.
