NOVELTY - A heteroleptic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in a single vessel is produced by (a) charging a reaction vessel with a first solvent, organosilane, water, and base at concentrations and holding for a time sufficient to allow for POSS cage formation; (b) adding a suitable acid to quench the POSS cage formation process through formation of a salt; (c) separating the salt from a reaction mixture, where the salt is separated from a POSS product; (d) removing the first solvent from the reaction vessel; and (e) packaging the POSS product from the reaction vessel. USE - Production of heteroleptic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in a single vessel for a composition used as coating, molded or shaped article, additive for surface modification of ingredients, particles, fibers, or as primer or interfacial layer in disparate material compositions, or as polymer modifier in composites, polymer blends, or interpenetrating networks (all claimed). ADVANTAGE - The heteroleptic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane enhances property of material composition including crosslinking, grafting and chain extension, dual and poly cure mechanisms, compatibility enhancement, miscibility enhancement, surfactant, delivery agent, dispersion, biological properties, optical properties, electrical properties, rheological properties, lubrication properties, cosmetic properties, thermal properties, hardness, flexibility, surface energy control, surface topology, gloss, plasticization, reinforcement, wetting and adhesion, chemical resistance, and fire resistance. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for enhancing a property of a material composition which involves utilizing a heteroleptic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) composition as an additive in a material composition to enhance greater than or equal to 1 enhanced properties of the material composition.
