NOVELTY - A flame retardant sheet molding compound (SMC) composition comprises flame retardant graphene material co-molded, over-molded, or adhesively joined with SMC in an SMC composition for providing flame retardancy with specific gravity of less than or equal to 1.8. USE - A flame retardant sheet molding compound (SMC) composition for battery box of electric vehicle (claimed). Can also be used for furnaces, vehicle panels, and consumer goods. ADVANTAGE - The SMC material can withstand gasoline burn tests of withstanding 960 degrees C for 130 s. Even when battery boxes in an electric vehicle made from the SMC compositions are exposed to a fire, properties are maintained, and useful life remains. This is an improvement over aluminum boxes where if exposed to high heat, they may either melt away or mechanical properties are severely diminished requiring replacement. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for battery box of electric vehicle comprising enclosure for containing electric vehicle battery, where at least a portion of the battery box includes the flame retardant SMC composition.
