NOVELTY - Composite carbon particles comprise carbon particles (A) and a carbon coating layer (B) covering the surfaces of the carbon particles. The carbon coating layer (B) includes a carbon film layer (B1) and carbon fine particles (B2). The layer (B1) includes a mono-layered or multi-layered graphene layer having a thickness of 0.1-30.0 nm. USE - Composite carbon particles used for active material for forming negative electrode for lithium-ion secondary battery (all claimed). Uses include but are not limited to mobile phones, notebook computers, digital cameras, motor vehicles, electric tools and electric bicycles. ADVANTAGE - The composite carbon particles provide battery having excellent low-temperature charging/discharging rate characteristics, high-temperature storage characteristics, high-temperature cycle characteristics and Coulombic efficiency, and low-internal resistance. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for the following: (1) manufacture of the composite carbon particles, which involves heat-treating the mixture of 70.0-98.89 parts mass carbon particles (A), 0.1-20.0 parts mass hydroxycarboxylic acid compound including one or more carboxyl groups and one or more hydroxyl groups, and 0.01-10.0 parts mass carbon fine particles (B2); and (2) a negative electrode, which comprises the negative electrode active material and a current collector.
