NOVELTY - Composite anode (100) comprises a pretreated zinc (Zn) layer with one or more first coating (120) layers, where in the Zn layer comprises a Zn film (110); a pretreated current collector substrate with one or more substrate coating layers; where the pretreated Zn layer is pretreated by one or more of polishing, grinding, sanding, etching, and cleaning and the pretreated current collector substrate is pretreated by one or more of polishing, grinding, sanding, etching, and cleaning. USE - Composite anode for a zinc-based battery device. ADVANTAGE - The composite anode has suppressed Zn dendrite growth and dead Zn particle generation, minimized corrosion, dissolution, passivation, and degradation. The coating suppresses passivation, oxidation, reduction, and degradation of Zn. The anode results in extended cycle life and low overpotential of the battery. DETAILED DESCRIPTION - INDEPENDENT CLAIMS are included for: i. a composite battery anode for a Zn-based battery device, which comprises a pretreated Zn anode layer comprising a composite of Zn powder, carbon powder, and a polymer binder, where the Zn anode layer is coated with one or more first coating layers; and on a pretreated current collector substrate coated with one or more substrate coating layers; and ii. a method for making a composite anode for a zinc-based battery device, which involves providing an anode comprising a Zn layer disposed on a currently collector substrate; pretreating an Zn layer by one or more of polishing, grinding, sanding, etching, and cleaning; pretreating a current collector substrate by one or more of polishing, grinding, sanding, etching, and cleaning; etching the Zn layer; after etching the Zn layer, coating the Zn layer with one or more first coating layers, where the first coating layers comprise titanium dioxide; and coating the current collector substrate with at least one substrate coating layer.
