NOVELTY - Production of graphene and graphite nanoplatelet structure in an electrochemical cell involves passing current through the cell to intercalate ions into a graphitic negative electrode so as to exfoliate the graphitic negative electrode. The electrochemical cell has a negative electrode which is graphitic, a positive electrode which is graphitic or other material, and an electrolyte containing ions in a solvent in which cations are sulfur-containing ions. The nanoplatelet structure has thickness of less than 100 nm. USE - Production of graphene and graphite nanoplatelet structure. Uses include but are not limited to polymer additive, surface area component of electrode for fuel cell, super-capacitor and lithium ion battery, conductive and transparent coating material for replacement of indium tin oxide, and electronic components. ADVANTAGE - The method produces high quality graphene and graphite nanoplatelet structure without need for controlled atmosphere and/or oxygen-free solvents, and is convenient and low energy one-step/one-pot process. The nanoplatelet structure does not have oxidative attack and retention of sulfur on the graphene structure.
