NOVELTY - Rechargeable battery comprises electrochemical cell which is hybrid redox flow cell comprising negative half-cell (1), positive half-cell (2), negolyte (3A) with polyoxometalate as redox active species in negative half-cell, membrane (4) disposed between negative half-cell and positive half-cell, negative electrode (5) in negative half-cell, positive electrode in positive half-cell, inlet and outlet connect negative half-cell with electrolyte tank via conduits equipped with pump, so that battery may be charged by provisioning the tank with charged negolyte, or recharged by replacing discharged negolyte with charged negolyte. The positive electrode is equipped with oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and eventually oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst or with bifunctional ORR and OER catalyst. USE - The battery is useful in stationary, portable or mobile devices or applications (claimed). ADVANTAGE - The battery: has high energy densities; provides high cell voltages, withstands high discharge currents; can be swiftly charged, has low self-discharge rates (in the order of 3-5% per month); has high columbic efficiency; and can be almost completely discharged without affecting cycle time, lifetime or high current output and are available in a number of variations adapted to different needs.
